How a numerical convention documented in seventh-century India may have travelled through Arabic astronomy into the mathematical traditions of medieval Europe.
Estimated reading time: 12–15 minutes for both language versions; approximately 6–8 minutes for either version individually.
Foreword
Some historical journeys are undertaken by travellers, some by manuscripts, and others by ideas so unobtrusive that their passage across centuries is scarcely noticed. The history of mathematics contains examples of all three. A numerical convention devised for astronomical computation in India may, centuries later, be encountered in tables used by astronomers in medieval Europe.
This essay examines one such possibility: the history of the radius-150 sine table associated with Brahmagupta, its relationship to the astronomical work of Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, and the appearance of a radius-150 table in the Toledan Tables of medieval Spain.
The story is not presented as an established chain of direct copying. The evidence is more subtle, and therefore more interesting. It involves the comparison of numbers, the reconstruction of lost works, and the distinction between the origin of a mathematical convention and the later production of a particular table.
Constitutional requirement: the spirit of scientific enquiry
This article is written in the spirit of Article 51A(h) of the Constitution of India, which identifies the development of scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry and reform as a fundamental duty of citizens.
The history of mathematics provides an excellent opportunity to exercise that duty. We must acknowledge India's documented mathematical achievements without attributing every subsequent development to a single source. Equally, the contributions of Arabic-speaking scholars and European astronomers deserve recognition on their own terms.
Scientific temper requires neither cultural chauvinism nor cultural amnesia. It requires us to follow the evidence, distinguish inference from fact, and allow a good historical question to remain open where the records do not provide a definitive answer.
About the author
Preface: the significance of a seemingly ordinary number
Imagine opening a medieval astronomical manuscript and discovering a table of numbers arranged in columns. There are no electronic calculators, no printed logarithmic tables, and no pocket reference books. Yet the astronomer who consults the manuscript must estimate celestial positions, calculate the motion of planets, and prepare predictions with the mathematical tools available to him.
In such circumstances, a table is more than a list of numbers. It is an instrument of calculation, a repository of accumulated labour, and sometimes a witness to the movement of knowledge between cultures.
One number in this story is particularly striking: 150.
In the Khaṇḍakhādyaka, an astronomical work composed by the Indian mathematician and astronomer Brahmagupta in 665 CE, a sine table uses a reference radius of 150. Centuries later, the Toledan Tables of medieval Iberia also contained a sine table on the same scale.
Did a European astronomer simply copy Brahmagupta's table? No such uncomplicated conclusion is justified. The evidence points instead towards a history involving Indian mathematical astronomy, its transmission into the Arabic scholarly world, and subsequent adaptation in al-Andalus.
To understand that history, we must first understand what the radius in a sine table actually means.
1. What is a sine table, and why does it have a radius?
Modern students generally encounter the sine function as a ratio. In a right-angled triangle, the sine of an angle is the length of the opposite side divided by the hypotenuse. In the unit-circle formulation, the sine of an angle is the vertical coordinate of a point on a circle of radius one.
Historical astronomers often used a different but closely related convention. Instead of taking the radius to be one, they selected a convenient numerical radius and tabulated the corresponding sine lengths.
For a reference radius \(R\), the tabulated quantity can be represented in modern notation as:
Thus, if the radius is 150, the tabulated value for 30° is 75, because the sine of 30° is one-half. At 90°, the value is 150. If the radius is 60, the corresponding values are 30 and 60.
The mathematical relationship remains the same. What changes is the scale in which the result is expressed.
| Angle | Modern sine | Radius 150 | Radius 60 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0° | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 30° | 0.5 | 75 | 30 |
| 45° | ≈ 0.7071 | ≈ 106.066 | ≈ 42.426 |
| 60° | ≈ 0.8660 | ≈ 129.904 | ≈ 51.962 |
| 90° | 1 | 150 | 60 |
Modern values are shown to illustrate the relationship. Historical tables commonly rounded entries and employed their own numerical conventions.
2. Brahmagupta's table: India, 665 CE
Brahmagupta, who lived from approximately 598 to 668 CE, was one of the major mathematicians and astronomers of early medieval India. His works addressed arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and astronomical computation.
His Khaṇḍakhādyaka, composed in 665 CE, is an astronomical handbook containing procedures and tables intended for practical calculation. Its sine table uses a reference radius of 150 and tabulates values at intervals of 15° from 0° to 90°.
The table is compact, but its significance extends beyond the choice of radius. Brahmagupta also describes a method of interpolation: a procedure for estimating a value that lies between the entries explicitly supplied in the table.
An astronomer who needed a sine value for 57°, for example, could not simply look up that exact angle in a table whose entries were separated by 15°. A rule was required to estimate the missing value from the surrounding entries.
Brahmagupta's method uses differences between successive tabulated values and a correction involving the change in those differences. In modern mathematical language, it is a form of second-order interpolation. This does not mean that the historical procedure should be casually identified with every later interpolation formula, but it does reveal a sophisticated engagement with numerical approximation.
The historical table
| Angle | Tabulated value | Difference from preceding entry |
|---|---|---|
| 0° | 0 | — |
| 15° | 39 | 39 |
| 30° | 75 | 36 |
| 45° | 106 | 31 |
| 60° | 130 | 24 |
| 75° | 145 | 15 |
| 90° | 150 | 5 |
The entries are rounded integers, rather than exact decimal values of 150 sin θ. Their successive differences decrease as the angle approaches 90°. Those differences are not incidental decoration: they are part of the numerical information used in interpolation.
This is a useful reminder that a historical mathematical table must be understood together with its computational instructions. The numbers alone tell only part of the story.
3. From India to Baghdad: al-Khwarizmi and astronomical tables
During the early ninth century, Baghdad was a major centre of scholarship. Astronomers working in the Arabic-language intellectual world studied, translated, adapted, and compared works originating in several traditions. Indian astronomical material formed part of this wider exchange.
Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, whose name is also familiar from the history of algebra, compiled astronomical tables known as a zīj. These works organised numerical information and procedures for calculating celestial positions and related phenomena.
Al-Khwarizmi's original astronomical work does not survive in a complete, unchanged form. Historians must reconstruct its contents from later witnesses, commentaries, and adaptations. This makes the transmission of individual tables a question for detailed textual and numerical analysis.
Research on al-Khwarizmi's sine tables discusses both the radius-60 convention and the Indian radius-150 convention. The evidence suggests that the radius-150 scale was present in the relevant astronomical tradition, but it does not establish that every later table using that scale was copied directly from Brahmagupta.
The distinction matters. A convention may be borrowed, while the table itself is recalculated, adapted, or reconstructed. The history of a mathematical idea is not necessarily identical to the history of a particular set of numbers.
4. Toledo: where the numerical trail becomes intriguing
In eleventh-century al-Andalus, the region of the Iberian Peninsula under Muslim rule, scholars compiled an influential collection of astronomical tables known as the Toledan Tables. Toledo was an important centre of astronomical learning, and the collection drew upon earlier work associated with al-Khwarizmi, al-Battani, and other astronomers.
The compilation is often associated with the Andalusian astronomer al-Zarqallu, known in Latin as Arzachel. His involvement was substantial, but the precise authorship and organisation of the tables and their accompanying instructions remain matters of scholarly discussion.
The Toledan Tables contained more than eighty tables, including two sine tables: one using radius 150 and another using radius 60. Their presence provides a particularly revealing case study in the movement and adaptation of mathematical astronomy.
The original Arabic Toledan Tables are no longer extant in their original form. Their contents are known through Latin manuscripts and textual versions transmitted from the twelfth century onwards. The survival of these witnesses has allowed historians to compare numerical values and reconstruct relationships between different versions.
5. The factor of 2.5: a numerical fingerprint
The most intriguing part of this investigation concerns the possibility that the entries in the Toledan radius-150 table were obtained by rescaling values from a radius-60 table.
The arithmetic is straightforward:
In modern notation, a sine table on radius 60 contains values represented by 60 sin θ. Multiplying these values by 2.5 gives the corresponding scale for radius 150:
The numerical relationship is exact in the ideal mathematical expression. Historical table entries, however, may already have been rounded. Multiplying rounded entries by 2.5 does not necessarily produce the same result as calculating and rounding each radius-150 value independently.
That distinction allows historians to look for numerical fingerprints. The pattern of the entries, their discrepancies, and the way rounding errors behave may reveal whether a table was calculated independently or derived from another table.
Denis Roegel's 2021 survey discusses the analysis by Benno van Dalen and the interpretation advanced by Daniel P. McCarthy and John G. Byrne. The numerical peculiarities of the Toledan radius-150 table suggest that it may have been derived from a radius-60 table by multiplication by 2.5.
McCarthy and Byrne propose that al-Zarqallu may have made this transformation, perhaps in an attempt to restore what he believed to be al-Khwarizmi's table. This is a scholarly hypothesis, not a proven identification of the person responsible for every entry.
There is a fascinating possibility here: the radius-150 convention may reflect an older Indian mathematical tradition, while the numerical entries of the surviving Western table may have been generated through a later transformation. The scale and the numbers need not have precisely the same history.
6. How medieval astronomical tables reached Latin Europe
From the twelfth century onwards, Latin scholars in the Iberian Peninsula and elsewhere gained access to substantial bodies of Arabic scientific learning. Translation, adaptation, commentary, and the reorganisation of existing material all contributed to the transmission of astronomy.
Gerard of Cremona, who died in 1187, is associated with the Latin transmission of astronomical works, including material connected with the Toledan Tables. The precise textual history is more complicated than a single act of translation, and the surviving manuscripts represent different versions of the tradition.
The Toledan Tables became influential tools for medieval European astronomers. They were eventually followed by other major collections, including the Alfonsine Tables, which were compiled under the patronage of Alfonso X of Castile in the thirteenth century and became highly influential in later European astronomy.
It is therefore prudent not to transfer claims about the number of surviving Alfonsine manuscripts or the duration of their dominance to the Toledan Tables without specific evidence. Each collection has its own history of use, revision, and survival.
7. The manuscript: what the surviving page can, and cannot, tell us
The accompanying manuscript photograph comes from Stiftsbibliothek St. Gallen, Cod. Sang. 848, catalogued as Tabulae Toletanae cum tractatu (canonibus). The digitised manuscript is available through the e-codices Virtual Manuscript Library of Switzerland.
The manuscript is a Latin witness to the Toledan astronomical tradition. Its first section contains explanatory canons, or instructions for using the tables, while the following section contains astronomical tables concerning planetary movements, eclipses, spherical astronomy, stars, and places.
The particular page shown in the accompanying photograph is a planetary table. It is not the radius-150 sine table discussed in this essay. The distinction is important: the manuscript demonstrates the survival and use of the Toledan collection, but this page alone does not prove the genealogy of its sine table.
To reconstruct that genealogy, historians compare the actual sine-table entries, examine differences between textual versions, and consult earlier scholarship. A photograph can bring us face to face with the material record; it cannot, on its own, answer every historical question.
Explore the digitised St. Gallen manuscript through e-codices.
8. What this history tells us about mathematics
The history of the radius-150 sine table offers several lessons that extend beyond the history of trigonometry.
First, mathematical knowledge travels through working practices. Astronomers did not merely exchange abstract ideas. They inherited tables, adapted algorithms, recalculated values, and revised methods to suit their own requirements.
Secondly, a numerical convention can survive a change of context. A radius chosen for one astronomical tradition may continue to appear in a later table even when the table's immediate numerical source is different.
Thirdly, historical evidence often survives imperfectly. Lost originals, later copies, altered tables, and different versions mean that the past must be reconstructed from incomplete records. Responsible scholarship acknowledges those limitations rather than concealing them.
Finally, the history of science is neither a relay race with a single winner nor a collection of isolated national achievements. It is a cumulative enterprise in which different communities preserve, question, refine, and transmit knowledge.
Conclusion: the journey of an idea
In 665 CE, Brahmagupta documented a sine table with a reference radius of 150 in his Khaṇḍakhādyaka. Centuries later, the Toledan Tables contained a sine table using the same scale. Between these points lie the mathematical traditions of India, the scholarly world of Baghdad, the astronomical culture of al-Andalus, and the Latin manuscript tradition of medieval Europe.
The evidence supports a meaningful historical connection, but not a simplistic claim that the surviving European entries were copied directly from Brahmagupta. The radius-150 convention and the numerical construction of the later table must be examined separately. The suggestion that a radius-60 table was rescaled by 2.5 is a compelling hypothesis grounded in numerical analysis, while the precise role of al-Zarqallu remains uncertain.
That qualification does not diminish the story. It is what makes the story worth telling. The past is rarely a straight road; it is more often a network of paths, detours, translations, and ingenious reconstructions.
A number can survive the loss of the book in which it first appeared. A method can cross linguistic boundaries. And a table copied or recalculated centuries later can preserve clues to a much older intellectual inheritance.
The enduring lesson is simple: to understand the history of mathematics, we must study not only the numbers, but also the journeys they made.

Sang.

Expanded glossary /
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Sine / சைன் | A trigonometric function relating an angle to a ratio or, in a unit-circle formulation, a coordinate. Historical tables often tabulated a scaled sine length. |
| Radius / ஆரம் | The distance from the centre of a circle to its circumference. In a scaled sine table, it determines the numerical size of the tabulated values. |
| Radius 150 / ஆரம் 150 | A convention in which the tabulated sine length is expressed on a reference radius of 150, so the value at 90° is 150. |
| Trigonometry / முக்கோணவியல் | The branch of mathematics concerned with relationships between angles and lengths, widely used in astronomy, surveying, and navigation. |
| Interpolation / இடைக்கணிப்பு | A mathematical procedure for estimating a value between known tabulated values. |
| Second-order interpolation / இரண்டாம் வரிசை இடைக்கணிப்பு | An interpolation method that uses information about changes in successive differences to refine an estimate between tabulated entries. |
| Tabular difference / அட்டவணை வேறுபாடு | The difference between successive entries in a numerical table. Its pattern can assist interpolation and historical analysis. |
| Rounding / வட்டமிடுதல் | Replacing a number with a nearby value of simpler precision. Rounding can leave recognisable patterns in derived tables. |
| Sexagesimal system / அறுபதடிப்படை எண் முறை | A base-60 numerical system historically important in Babylonian mathematics and astronomy and continued in the measurement of angles and time. |
| Zīj / ஸீஜ் | An astronomical handbook or collection of tables and computational rules associated with the Arabic-language astronomical tradition. |
| Khaṇḍakhādyaka / கண்டகாத்யகம் | Brahmagupta's astronomical work, composed in 665 CE, containing procedures and tables for practical astronomical calculations. |

Questions for further study
- How did the use of different reference radii affect the practical computation of sine values in Indian and Arabic astronomy?
- What can the pattern of rounding errors tell us about whether a historical table was calculated independently or derived from an earlier one?
- How do historians distinguish the transmission of a mathematical convention from the direct copying of a numerical table?
- What can the surviving Latin manuscripts reveal about the organisation, revision, and practical use of the Toledan Tables?
- How did the Alfonsine Tables and other later collections alter the practice of astronomy in medieval Europe?
- Which conclusions about al-Zarqallu are directly supported by surviving evidence, and which remain hypotheses about authorship or reconstruction?
Methodological note: The possible rescaling by 2.5 and the proposed role of al-Zarqallu are attributed interpretations in modern scholarship. They should not be presented as incontrovertible facts. The original Arabic Toledan Tables do not survive in their original form, and the Latin witnesses represent a complex textual history.
