An Observation, Not a Diagnosis
ADHD, Learning Differences, Generational Change, and the Tyranny of Distraction
A personal reflection examined through the lens of scientific evidence
Nature of this article: A personal essay, not medical advice, a diagnostic assessment, or a systematic review of the scientific literature.
Foreword
In an age when every personal anecdote can be dressed up as an evidence-based policy paper, it is as well to declare one's limitations before someone else does it on one's behalf. This essay begins, therefore, not with a grand theory, but with an observation.
Over the years, I have become increasingly conscious of attention difficulties, learning differences, impatience, and the seemingly irresistible urge to reach for a mobile phone whenever a moment of inactivity presents itself. I have also wondered whether the growing visibility of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disorders reflects a change in society, a change in our diagnostic practices, or both.
I do not possess a clinical qualification, nor have I conducted a controlled study of these phenomena. I cannot claim to have surveyed generations, measured attention spans, or established a causal relationship between technology and neurodevelopmental conditions. What follows is an attempt to place a personal impression alongside what published research can reasonably tell us.
The distinction matters. Observation may suggest a question; it cannot, by itself, settle the answer.

Constitutional Requirement: The Duty to Develop Scientific Temper
Article 51A(h) of the Constitution of India identifies the development of scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry and reform as a fundamental duty of every citizen. It is a particularly apt principle for a subject on which anecdote, popular psychology, social media, and scientific research can so easily become entangled.
Scientific temper does not require us to suppress personal experience. It asks us to distinguish experience from evidence, inference from established fact, and a plausible explanation from a demonstrated cause. It also requires intellectual humility: the willingness to revise a conclusion when better evidence becomes available.
The humane application of scientific temper is equally important. A person who learns differently is not a defective version of someone who learns conventionally. Nor should a diagnostic label become a substitute for understanding the individual who carries it.
About the Author
I am Dhinakar Rajaram, an independent science writer, science communicator, amateur astronomer, and outreach volunteer based in Chennai. My interests extend across astronomy, science, technology, engineering, history, and the ways in which these subjects intersect with everyday life and human culture.
I have a personal interest in this subject because I live with ADHD and learning difficulties, including dyscalculia. Mathematics has never been the easiest terrain for me, although that has not diminished my interest in it. My experience has taught me that difficulty in one mode of learning need not extinguish curiosity, imagination, or the desire to understand the world.
I write here as a person reflecting on lived experience, not as a clinician speaking from professional authority. I make no claim that my experience represents everyone with ADHD or a learning disorder. Individual experiences differ, and those differences deserve to be taken seriously.

Preface: The Difference Between Noticing and Knowing
There is a temptation, particularly in public discussion, to convert a repeated impression into a sweeping conclusion. One sees more children struggling to concentrate, more adults discussing ADHD, more students receiving learning support, and more people reaching for a phone at the slightest pause in conversation. The mind joins these observations together and produces a story.
But a story, however convincing, is not necessarily an explanation. We may be witnessing an increase in the underlying occurrence of a condition, an increase in its recognition, a change in social behaviour, or several developments operating simultaneously.
This essay explores those possibilities without pretending that one personal account can resolve them. It also asks a broader question: in a society that prizes speed, instant gratification, and uninterrupted stimulation, what happens to patience, sustained attention, and the quiet labour of thinking?
1. ADHD and Learning Disorders: What Do These Terms Mean?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by persistent patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity. Symptoms occur in two or more settings and interfere with functioning. Its presentation varies. Some individuals experience prominent difficulties with attention and organisation; others experience substantial hyperactivity and impulsivity; many experience a combination of features.
ADHD is not synonymous with occasional distraction, impatience, forgetfulness, or excessive phone use. Everyone can experience these behaviours. A diagnosis requires a persistent pattern, evidence of impairment, an appropriate developmental history, and a qualified clinical assessment.
Specific learning disorders concern persistent difficulties in particular academic skills, such as reading, written expression, or mathematics. Dyslexia is commonly associated with difficulties in accurate or fluent word reading and related language-processing skills. Dysgraphia is a term often used for difficulties with writing, although its meaning and clinical use vary. Dyscalculia concerns persistent difficulties in learning or using numerical and mathematical skills.
These conditions are not interchangeable, and not every person who struggles academically has a learning disorder. Educational opportunity, language, teaching methods, sensory difficulties, stress, and other circumstances can affect learning too. Assessment should consider the whole person rather than seize upon a single symptom.
Most importantly, a learning difficulty is not a measurement of a person's entire intellectual capacity. A person may reason brilliantly in one context and need substantial support in another. The mind is not a single switch that is either on or off; it is a collection of abilities that do not always develop or operate uniformly.
2. Intelligence Is Not a Single Straight Road
I have a personal stake in this distinction. I live with ADHD and dyscalculia, and mathematics has often been difficult for me. Yet I remain fascinated by science, astronomy, engineering, and the intellectual history of humanity. My difficulty with numerical work does not cancel my curiosity, just as my curiosity does not make my difficulties imaginary.
It is therefore important to reject two opposite errors. The first is to assume that a person with ADHD or a learning disorder must be less intelligent. The second is to insist that everyone with such a condition must possess exceptional intelligence. Neither proposition is justified.
Intelligence varies among people with and without ADHD or learning disorders. Some are highly gifted, some have average intellectual abilities, and some have co-occurring conditions that create additional difficulties. A specific learning disorder can occur across a range of general intellectual abilities. ADHD, too, is not a test of intelligence.
There is no need to romanticise a disability in order to respect the person who lives with it. Difficulties can be real, exhausting, and consequential; strengths can be real as well. The sensible course is to recognise both without turning either into a universal rule.
A further caution concerns celebrated historical figures. Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Thomas Edison are sometimes described in popular accounts as though they had modern diagnoses of ADHD or specific learning disorders. Such claims need careful scrutiny. Their lives were not assessed through today's diagnostic frameworks, and retrospective diagnosis from selected anecdotes cannot establish a clinical condition.
Their achievements may inspire us, but they cannot serve as proof that ADHD or dyscalculia produces genius. Nor should anyone need a famous historical counterpart before being granted dignity, understanding, or appropriate support.
3. Are We Seeing More ADHD, or Recognising It More Often?
This is the central scientific question. An increase in the number of recorded diagnoses does not automatically mean that the underlying condition has become more common by the same proportion. Diagnosis rates can change because awareness improves, services become more accessible, clinicians recognise previously overlooked presentations, families seek help more readily, or diagnostic practices change. At the same time, changes in the population, environment, and referral pathways may also matter.
A population-based study of UK primary-care records examined ADHD diagnoses and prescriptions between 2000 and 2018. It found rising rates of recorded diagnoses across most age groups. The rate of new diagnoses doubled in boys under 18 and quadrupled in girls under 18 over the study period. Relative increases among adults were larger, particularly in some age groups.
These findings demonstrate a substantial change in recorded clinical practice. They do not, on their own, tell us exactly how much of that change arose from better recognition, changes in diagnostic behaviour, greater help-seeking, or changes in underlying prevalence. The study was based on primary-care records, and its findings should not be treated as a direct measurement of every person with ADHD in the UK, let alone in India.
The distinction is fundamental. A condition may have been present in a person for years before anyone recognises it. When the diagnosis finally arrives, the record shows a new diagnosis, not necessarily a newly developed condition.
This is especially relevant to adults who were labelled careless, disorganised, disruptive, or insufficiently diligent during childhood. Some may indeed have had unrecognised ADHD or learning difficulties; others may have faced entirely different challenges. The past cannot be reconstructed reliably from a label alone.
My observation across generations—from Generation X through Generation Alpha—is therefore best treated as a question about visibility, not as proof of a generational epidemic. Generation Beta has only recently begun to arrive, and it would be premature to make broad claims about its developmental characteristics.
One cannot reasonably audit a generation that is still learning to walk, let alone expect it to sit still for an assessment.
4. From Misunderstanding to Recognition
In earlier decades, difficulties with attention, reading, writing, or mathematics were often interpreted through the moral vocabulary of the classroom. A child might be called lazy, careless, unruly, or inattentive. Sometimes such descriptions reflected genuine behavioural problems; at other times, they concealed a difficulty that had not yet been understood.
It would be an exaggeration to suggest that every school or family once ignored these conditions. Awareness and support varied widely, and specialist knowledge existed long before the present period. Nevertheless, public understanding, diagnostic practice, and educational accommodations have changed considerably in many places.
Greater recognition can help people understand their experiences, obtain appropriate support, and replace self-reproach with practical strategies. Yet a diagnosis must be made carefully. Everyday restlessness, poor sleep, stress, anxiety, depression, and other difficulties may overlap with some symptoms. A social-media checklist is not a substitute for professional assessment.
There are two ways to fail a person: by overlooking a genuine difficulty, and by assigning an inaccurate label. A humane system must avoid both. The objective should not be to maximise diagnoses or minimise them, but to understand needs accurately and respond proportionately.
5. The Tyranny of the Ten-Second Attention Span
There is another pattern that troubles me, though it must not be confused with ADHD. People often appear reluctant to read anything substantial. A short pause in conversation, a queue that moves slowly, or a moment without an immediate task can prompt an almost automatic reach for the mobile phone.
Silence, once an ordinary feature of daily life, can seem to have become an affront. The smartphone has been elevated from useful instrument to constant companion, a digital talisman summoned whenever boredom raises its head.
The phenomenon is worth examining scientifically. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis considered 59 empirical studies of boredom and digital-media use. It found a very small positive association between boredom and digital-media use, and a medium-to-large positive association between boredom and problematic digital-media use. However, most of the studies were cross-sectional, and the authors noted that stronger longitudinal evidence was needed to understand causality.
That qualification is not a footnote to be brushed aside. People may turn to their phones because they are bored; habitual phone use may also make ordinary pauses feel less rewarding; or both may be influenced by other factors. An association can point towards a useful question without identifying a single direction of cause and effect.
Research reported by the University of Essex in 2026 also examined aversion to boredom and smartphone use. Its findings suggest that people who particularly dislike being bored may use their phones more and show more problematic patterns of use. This is a useful line of inquiry, but it does not establish that every frequent phone user has an attention disorder, or that every person who dislikes boredom is psychologically unwell.
The more interesting question may be whether we are losing the habit of allowing the mind to wander without immediately supplying it with another stimulus. Waiting, reflecting, daydreaming, and following a difficult idea to its conclusion are not necessarily wasted intervals. They can be part of the work of thinking.
6. Impatience, Conversation, and Phubbing
I often notice a related difficulty: a conversation can become less an exchange of ideas than a contest for the next turn to speak. The listener appears to be preparing a reply before the speaker has finished. A mobile phone lies within reach, ready to interrupt the exchange at the first vibration or notification.
The research term phubbing combines the words “phone” and “snubbing”. It describes the act of giving attention to a phone instead of to a person who is physically present. Research has examined associations between phubbing, problematic smartphone use, social interaction, and attention to digital cues.
It is tempting to describe this as a straightforward cycle in which one behaviour inevitably produces another. The evidence warrants more restraint. Studies differ in design and measurement, and many findings are correlational. Nevertheless, repeated interruptions can plainly make it harder for people to give one another their undivided attention, whatever the underlying psychological mechanism.
There is also a social cost that cannot be captured fully by screen-time statistics. To be repeatedly ignored in favour of a device may communicate indifference, even when no insult is intended. A phone need not be used maliciously to become an unwelcome third participant in a conversation.
Perhaps the simplest courtesy is also the most difficult: to put the phone aside when another person deserves our attention. Listening is not merely the absence of speech. It is an active willingness to make room for another mind.
7. Technology as the Path of Least Resistance
Digital technology has made information extraordinarily accessible. It can help a person with a learning difficulty read text aloud, enlarge print, organise tasks, use speech-to-text, or approach a difficult subject through a different medium. These are genuine advantages, and it would be foolish to dismiss them.
Yet convenience has a second face. If every moment of uncertainty is met with a search, every pause with a scroll, and every demanding passage with an instant summary, we may become less practised at tolerating intellectual effort. The problem is not that summaries are inherently bad, or that looking things up is a failure. It is that the shortcut can become the only route we are willing to take.
A summary can introduce a subject; it cannot always replace the experience of following an argument from premise to conclusion. A calculator can remove tedious arithmetic; it does not necessarily replace an understanding of what the calculation means. Assistive technology can make learning accessible while still leaving room for sustained thought.
The scientific evidence concerning screens and attention is not simple enough to support the sweeping claim that smartphones have destroyed everyone's attention span. Screen use varies in content, purpose, timing, and context. Age, sleep, family circumstances, pre-existing difficulties, and individual differences may all affect the relationship between digital activity and attention.
It is therefore more defensible to examine specific habits than to condemn an entire technology. Frequent interruptions, automatic checking, sleep-displacing use, and difficulty disengaging are more useful subjects for reflection than a vague declaration that screens are ruining an entire generation.
8. ADHD Is Not Another Name for Smartphone Distraction
This distinction deserves emphasis because popular discussion can blur it. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition with a developmental history and functional consequences. Smartphone distraction is a behaviour that can occur in people with or without ADHD.
A person with ADHD may find certain digital environments especially difficult to manage, but that does not mean the phone caused the condition. Conversely, a person who checks a phone constantly does not thereby have ADHD. Similar outward behaviours can arise through different pathways.
Genetic and neurobiological factors contribute substantially to ADHD, while development and environmental circumstances may influence how difficulties are experienced and managed. The precise causes and interactions are complex. No single lifestyle habit, parenting style, or technological device provides a complete explanation.
This is why diagnosis should be left to qualified professionals, and why public discussion should avoid turning ordinary behaviour into a clinical label. Scientific language is most useful when it clarifies distinctions, not when it supplies a fashionable name for every frustration.
9. What Can We Do Without Turning This into a Moral Panic?
We need not wait for every scientific uncertainty to be resolved before adopting sensible habits. Nor should we imagine that every difficulty can be corrected by willpower alone. Practical steps can help, provided they are treated as options rather than universal prescriptions.
- Protect uninterrupted time. Set aside a manageable period for reading, writing, study, or conversation, with non-essential notifications silenced.
- Make reading accessible. Use larger text, audiobooks, text-to-speech, or structured notes where these improve access. An accommodation is not a shortcut to be ashamed of.
- Allow pauses to exist. A queue, a journey, or a quiet interval need not be filled automatically. Boredom can sometimes be tolerated without immediately trying to abolish it.
- Listen deliberately. In conversation, put devices away when possible, allow the other person to finish, and resist the urge to prepare a rebuttal before understanding the point being made.
- Seek assessment when difficulties persist. If attention or learning difficulties substantially interfere with daily life, an appropriate professional assessment may help identify the cause and suitable support.
- Judge needs, not labels. Schools, workplaces, and families can make practical adjustments without assuming that every person with the same diagnosis needs the same solution.
These measures are not treatments for ADHD, nor do they replace professional advice. They are ordinary ways of making room for concentration, accessibility, and courtesy in a world that often competes for our attention.
10. A Caveat, As Ever
It would be intellectually dishonest to claim certainty where the evidence remains incomplete. Recorded diagnoses have risen in many settings, but the extent to which this reflects altered prevalence, improved recognition, changes in help-seeking, or diagnostic practices cannot be inferred from one statistic alone.
The research on boredom and digital-media use identifies associations, but the direction and mechanisms of those relationships remain subjects for further investigation. The social effects of smartphones are likewise unlikely to be identical for every person, age group, or form of use.
My own observations are not a representative survey. I cannot infer the prevalence of ADHD from the people I encounter, or conclude that a generation is less patient merely because some behaviours are more visible to me. Nor can I determine the cause of another person's difficulties by watching them use a phone.
What I can do is ask questions, examine credible evidence, and remain alert to the possibility that my first explanation may be incomplete. That, too, is part of scientific temper.
11. From the Classroom to the Screen: What Has Really Changed?
Perhaps one of the most important changes is not that human beings have suddenly acquired new weaknesses, but that our difficulties are discussed in a different social and technological environment. Conditions once overlooked may now be recognised. Experiences once kept private may now be shared openly. At the same time, digital platforms can amplify simplified explanations, encourage self-labelling, and turn complex questions into brief, emotionally compelling claims.
Neither uncritical acceptance nor blanket scepticism serves us well. A person's account of their difficulties deserves to be heard; a clinical diagnosis deserves careful assessment; and a scientific claim deserves evidence proportionate to its importance.
We should also resist the idea that patience is merely a virtue belonging to an earlier generation. Every generation faces distractions of its own. Today's devices are unusually portable, personalised, and available, but the human struggle to balance immediate pleasure against longer-term aims is much older than the smartphone.
The challenge is not to return nostalgically to an imagined past in which everyone read attentively and listened perfectly. Such a past never existed. It is to build habits and environments that make sustained attention possible, while recognising that some people need different forms of support to achieve it.
A Wholehearted Thank You
And finally, a wholehearted and unreserved thank you to you, the reader, whoever you may be, who has stayed with this essay to its conclusion.
In an age when attention is relentlessly solicited, when every spare moment seems to invite another notification, and when a long argument can be displaced by a passing headline, your willingness to read patiently is no small thing.
It does not prove that you possess a superior attention span, nor should it be turned into a test by which others are judged. It simply means that you have given a piece of writing your time, and allowed an argument to unfold rather than demanding that it arrive in a single instant.
For that, I am sincerely grateful.
If this essay has one final plea, it is this: let us be curious without being credulous, sceptical without being cynical, and patient without mistaking every difficulty for a personal failing.
A diagnosis can help explain a difficulty. It does not define the entirety of a human being. A device can connect us to the world. It should not prevent us from being present in it.
And an observation, however sincere, is best offered not as a verdict, but as an invitation to think.

Use: The constitutional duty to develop scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry and reform. - Further study: Research methods. When reading studies on ADHD or digital habits, check whether the evidence comes from a population-based cohort, a clinical sample, a cross-sectional survey, or a longitudinal study. These designs answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Further study: Historical claims. Claims that historical figures had a modern clinical condition should be checked against reliable biographies and primary historical records. Where no valid clinical assessment was possible, a retrospective diagnosis should be described as speculation, not established fact.

Final Editorial Note
This essay distinguishes personal observations from scientific findings, avoids treating ADHD as a synonym for distraction, and does not assume that all people with ADHD or learning disorders have exceptional intelligence. Historical diagnostic claims are treated cautiously, and the cited research is not presented as proof of a single cause for changes in attention or diagnosis rates.
