Inside the Image: Processing My M16 Photograph
The finished image of the Pillars of Creation is the result of a carefully organised processing workflow, rather than a single exposure. Dr Arun K. Shankar used a Seestar S50 with its light-pollution filter to capture the data. The processing began by stacking exposures from 13 separate pointings into a mosaic, with 2× drizzle applied to the data.
Of the 701 input frames, 574 were accepted for the final stack: 357 exposures of 10 seconds each and 217 exposures of 20 seconds each. Together, these provided a total accepted integration time of 2 hours, 11 minutes and 50 seconds. Since the mosaic combines different pointings, the accumulated exposure depth is not uniform across the entire image.
Background extraction was carried out in GraXpert. The nebular object and the stars were then treated separately during deconvolution, helping to refine their respective details.
The image was next plate-solved in Siril, and StarNet was used to separate the nebula from the stars. The starless and stars-only versions were processed independently using VeraLux HyperMetric Stretch, followed by histogram and curves adjustments. VeraLux Alchemy was not used in this workflow.
Both processed versions were saved as TIFF files and transferred to GIMP for colour adjustments. The nebula and stars were then recombined as layers, with the stars layer blended using the Screen mode.
The final stage took place in Adobe Lightroom Classic, where colour, contrast and the overall appearance were refined. The image was also rotated and cropped to produce the finished composition.
Processing note: This account records the workflow described by Dr Arun K. Shankar, the photographer. The software operations and exposure figures are included to illustrate the successive stages through which astronomical image data can be transformed into a finished photograph.

A Note About the Photographer
Before we begin, I would like to introduce the person behind this remarkable photograph. Dr Arun K. Shankar (அருண் கே. ஷங்கர்) is a Principal Scientist in Plant Physiology at the Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA), under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
Arun is also a dear, long-standing friend of mine. Over the years, our friendship has been enriched by shared interests, conversations, and an appreciation of the natural world. Although his professional field is plant physiology, this photograph of the Pillars of Creation reveals another facet of his scientific curiosity: the patience and care involved in observing and portraying the distant Universe.
I am pleased to share his work here, with due acknowledgement to him as the photographer, and to explore the remarkable astronomical story behind this image.
Foreword: When the Universe Becomes a Portrait
There are astronomical photographs that delight the eye, and there are others that invite us to contemplate the immensity of the Universe. The Pillars of Creation, within the Eagle Nebula (Messier 16, or M16), belong to the latter category. Their towering forms, dark outlines, and luminous surroundings make them one of the most recognisable sights in modern astronomical imagery.
What appears at first to be a landscape of celestial mountains is, in fact, a region of gas and dust shaped by gravity, radiation, and stellar winds. The pillars are neither solid columns nor permanent monuments. They are evolving structures in an environment where stars are born and their surroundings are simultaneously transformed.
This photograph is particularly meaningful to me as a student of the night sky and an independent science communicator. I regard the Pillars of Creation as one of the most compelling deep-sky subjects to explore. The image presented here is credited to Dr Arun K. Shankar, and the accompanying photographic details are based on the text supplied by him.
The stated integration time is 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 50 seconds, accumulated over two sessions on 8 March 2025 and 13 October 2026. The two dates are separated by approximately one year, seven months, and five days. The resulting image offers an opportunity to discuss not merely the beauty of a nebula, but also the patient collection of faint light and the physical processes that govern star formation.
Perhaps the most arresting thought is that the light reaching us from this region began its journey roughly 6,500 years ago. It was already travelling towards Earth long before the Great Pyramid of Giza was built. The photograph is, therefore, not simply a view of a distant cloud. It is a record of ancient light, received and interpreted in the present.
Preface: What Are the Pillars of Creation?
The Pillars of Creation are immense, pillar-like concentrations of cool interstellar gas and dust within the Eagle Nebula. They are part of a larger star-forming region in the constellation Serpens, approximately 6,500 light-years from Earth.
The name became familiar worldwide after the Hubble Space Telescope released its celebrated image in 1995. Later observations, including Hubble's revisiting of the region and the James Webb Space Telescope's infrared views released in 2022, provided further information about the structures and the young stars associated with them.
The phrase “Pillars of Creation” is evocative, but it also points towards a scientific question: how does diffuse interstellar matter become a star? The answer involves gravity, temperature, density, turbulence, magnetic fields, and radiation. The pillars are not simply a backdrop for young stars; they are part of the environment in which the process of star formation can occur.
1. M16: The Eagle Nebula
The Eagle Nebula is catalogued as Messier 16, commonly shortened to M16. It lies in Serpens, a constellation in the northern celestial hemisphere. The nebula is an emission nebula and a well-known site of star formation.
An emission nebula is a cloud of gas that emits light after its atoms have been energised, often by ultraviolet radiation from nearby hot stars. The resulting light can be recorded through suitable astronomical filters. Different filters reveal different emissions and can be combined to produce scientifically informative colour images.
The Pillars occupy only a portion of the larger Eagle Nebula. They are immense by terrestrial standards, extending over several light-years, yet they form just one feature within a much larger cosmic environment.
Their familiar appearance is partly a matter of contrast. Dense material has survived longer than some of the less dense surrounding gas, while radiation and stellar winds have sculpted the cloud. The result resembles tall columns emerging from a dark cavern, although the structures are made of diffuse matter rather than rock.
2. A Light-Year Is a Distance, Not a Duration
The expression “6,500 light-years away” is often mistaken for a statement about the age of an object. A light-year, however, is a unit of distance: the distance light travels in a vacuum in one year. It is approximately 9.46 trillion kilometres.
Light travels at approximately 299,792 kilometres per second in a vacuum. Even at this extraordinary speed, a journey across 6,500 light-years takes approximately 6,500 years as measured in the usual Earth-centred description.
Consequently, the light recorded in this image left the Eagle Nebula roughly 6,500 years ago. It began its journey long before the Great Pyramid of Giza was completed, around the middle of the third millennium BCE.
This comparison is a useful historical illustration, not a claim that the pillars have remained unchanged throughout that interval. The nebula is dynamic. The image shows the light that has reached us, not a live view of the nebula as it exists at the present instant.
3. How Do Stars Form in Clouds of Gas and Dust?
Stars form when sufficiently dense regions of interstellar material contract under gravity. In cold molecular clouds, gas and dust can accumulate into denser concentrations. If a region becomes gravitationally unstable, it may collapse, causing its central material to grow denser and hotter.
An early stage of this process is called a protostar. A protostar is not yet a fully established star powered by sustained hydrogen fusion in its core. It continues to gather and process material as its internal conditions evolve.
Star formation is not a simple, uninterrupted descent from cloud to star. Turbulence, magnetic fields, gas pressure, radiation, and the movement of surrounding material all affect the outcome. Some dense regions may collapse; others may be dispersed before they form stars.
This is why the term “stellar nursery” is a helpful metaphor, but not a literal description of a uniform factory. The pillars do not produce stars at a constant rate, and not every dark knot will necessarily become a star.
4. The Paradox of Creation and Erosion
The Pillars of Creation illustrate a striking astronomical paradox. The same stellar environment that permits star formation can also help destroy the material from which stars might form.
Young, massive stars emit intense ultraviolet radiation. This radiation can ionise and heat nearby gas, while stellar winds and energetic particles help erode the surrounding clouds. The denser portions may resist this erosion longer than the less dense material around them, leaving pillar-like structures.
The process is sometimes compared with a landscape in which resistant rock remains standing while softer material is worn away. The comparison is useful, provided we remember that the pillars are gaseous structures and that the forces involved operate on astronomical scales.
In such an environment, creation and erosion are not mutually exclusive. New stars may form in some regions while radiation disperses material elsewhere. The outcome depends on local physical conditions rather than on a single universal sequence.
5. Hubble and Webb: Two Ways of Reading the Same Nebula
The Hubble Space Telescope's 1995 image brought the Pillars of Creation to worldwide attention. Hubble's later observations added detail and enabled astronomers to examine the region in visible and infrared light.
The James Webb Space Telescope offered a new view in 2022, using its Near-Infrared Camera, or NIRCam. Near-infrared observations can reveal certain features within dusty regions that are difficult to distinguish in visible light. Webb also helps astronomers identify young stars and examine structures associated with ongoing star formation.
These images should not be treated as competing photographs. Different instruments and wavelengths reveal different aspects of the same physical environment. A visible-light image and an infrared image may differ substantially while both remaining scientifically valid.
Nor should the colours in processed astronomical images automatically be understood as the exact colours a human observer would see nearby. Many images assign visible colours to selected filters or wavelengths so that different emissions and structures can be distinguished. Such representations are informative, but their colours are often constructed rather than a literal naked-eye view.
6. Why Infrared Light Matters
Dust is an important component of star-forming regions. It absorbs and scatters some wavelengths of light, making parts of a nebula difficult to observe in visible light. Infrared radiation can pass through certain dusty regions more effectively, allowing astronomers to investigate features that might otherwise remain obscured.
This does not mean that infrared light passes through every cloud without hindrance. Dense dust can still block or attenuate radiation, and the effectiveness depends on wavelength and the physical properties of the material.
Webb's observations demonstrate how changing the wavelength can change the scientific question that an image helps to answer. A telescope does not merely take a better photograph by seeing in infrared; it measures a different part of the electromagnetic spectrum and thereby provides complementary evidence.
7. The Photograph: 2 Hours, 11 Minutes, 50 Seconds
The stated accumulated integration time for the photograph is 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 50 seconds, equivalent to 7,910 seconds. The data were captured during two sessions, on 8 March 2025 and 13 October 2026.
Deep-sky objects are often faint. A single exposure may contain only a weak signal from a nebula, mixed with detector noise and background brightness. Recording multiple suitable exposures and combining them can improve the visibility of the consistent astronomical signal.
This process is commonly called image stacking. The data must be aligned and combined appropriately. The final result also depends on tracking accuracy, sky conditions, the detector, optical equipment, exposure strategy, calibration, and image processing.
Integration time is important, but it is not the sole measure of quality. A longer exposure does not automatically produce a better image if the data are poorly tracked, heavily affected by background light, or processed in a way that obscures genuine detail.
The two dates are separated by more than a year and a half. That interval is not itself an exposure time: the stated integration time is the combined duration of the contributing observations. Setup, focusing, target acquisition, calibration, processing, and other activities may require additional time.
This distinction matters because astrophotography is both an exercise in patience and a process of measurement. A finished image may embody many separate decisions, from the selection of exposures to the restraint exercised during processing.
8. What Does “Collecting Photons” Actually Mean?
A photon is a quantum of electromagnetic radiation. Visible light is only one portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, which also includes radio waves, infrared radiation, ultraviolet radiation, X-rays, and gamma rays.
A digital astronomical detector records the effects of incoming light and converts them into measurable electronic signals. Those measurements are subsequently represented as digital data. A telescope does not store photons in the manner of a container collecting water; the detector registers their interactions with the sensor.
The expression “photon collection” is nevertheless a useful shorthand for the accumulation of light over an exposure. In faint-object imaging, the aim is to gather sufficient signal to distinguish the object from noise and background variations.
There are limits. Background brightness, detector characteristics, tracking errors, calibration, and processing all influence the result. The purpose is not to make every faint feature conspicuous at any cost, but to present the recorded signal faithfully.
9. What the Image Can—and Cannot—Tell Us
A photograph can show the projected shapes, brightness variations, and colour differences recorded by a particular instrument. Scientific interpretation can then relate those features to the physical conditions of the nebula.
Yet a two-dimensional image does not automatically reveal the complete three-dimensional arrangement of the gas and dust. Nor does a single image provide a direct measurement of every temperature, density, velocity, or age within the region.
Astronomers combine imaging with spectroscopy, measurements at different wavelengths, theoretical models, and observations made at different times. This combination of evidence allows them to test explanations and estimate physical properties.
The distinction between an image and its interpretation is not a weakness. It is one of the strengths of scientific practice: observations establish what has been recorded, while models and further measurements help explain why it appears that way.
10. A Personal Reflection: The Patience of Looking
What I find especially rewarding about deep-sky astronomy is the way it changes our sense of scale. The eye sees a photograph in an instant, but the light may have travelled for thousands of years, and the structures that emitted it have evolved over far longer periods.
The Pillars of Creation bring this contrast into sharp focus. Their forms are immense, their physical history is complex, and their light crosses a distance that is difficult to imagine in everyday terms. Yet a camera, a detector, and careful processing can turn that faint arrival of ancient light into an image that invites a wider audience to ask scientific questions.
The two observing dates also remind us that a photograph need not be completed in one uninterrupted session. Suitable observations can accumulate over separate nights, provided the data are handled carefully and the final combination is technically sound.
I am grateful to Dr Arun K. Shankar for the photograph and for the technical text that informs this discussion. The image is a starting point for a wider conversation about star formation, radiation, the nature of light, and the value of patient observation.
We cannot hurry the Universe. We can, however, learn to observe it with greater care, question our assumptions, and recognise that even a beautiful photograph can become a doorway to scientific understanding.
11. Scientific Temper: Wonder Followed by Inquiry
The Pillars of Creation offer a fine example of how visual wonder can lead to scientific inquiry. Their appearance invites questions: What are they made of? Why have they acquired these shapes? How do stars form? Why do images taken at different wavelengths look different? What can light tell us about a region thousands of light-years away?
Science does not require us to abandon wonder. It asks us to investigate its causes, distinguish observation from interpretation, and revise our explanations when new evidence becomes available.
This approach is consonant with Article 51A(h) of the Constitution of India, which identifies the development of scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry and reform as a fundamental duty of every citizen.
Astronomy is especially suited to this endeavour. It encourages patience, intellectual humility, and an appreciation of evidence. The night sky is beautiful in its own right; understanding the physical processes behind that beauty adds another dimension to the experience.
Conclusion: An Ancient Message Received Today
The Pillars of Creation are not merely a celebrated astronomical image. They are a natural laboratory for investigating the interplay of gravity, radiation, gas, dust, and star formation. Their familiar shape has helped bring these complex processes within reach of public imagination.
The photograph discussed here represents 7,910 seconds of stated integration time collected across two sessions more than a year apart. The light itself, however, has travelled for approximately 6,500 years before reaching Earth.
That is the deeper fascination of astronomy: the present is continually receiving evidence from the past. A careful image allows us to turn that evidence into a question, a question into an investigation, and an investigation into a more informed understanding of our place in the Universe.
