Constitutional Requirement

Article 51A(h) of the Constitution of India calls upon every citizen to develop the scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry and reform. Astronomy offers an especially fine field in which to practise that duty. The night sky invites wonder, but science asks us to proceed from wonder to observation, from observation to evidence, and from evidence to conclusions that remain open to revision.

Foreword

Few stars have been watched with the mixture of familiarity and apprehension that surrounds Betelgeuse. It is one of Orion’s conspicuous stars, a ruddy beacon that even a casual sky-watcher can recognise. It is also a star whose behaviour has repeatedly reminded astronomers that a familiar object is not necessarily a simple one.

Now comes an intriguing development. Astronomers using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope have obtained the clearest direct image yet of a faint source consistent with the long-suspected companion of Betelgeuse. The object is provisionally designated Betelgeuse B. The observation does not merely add another dot to a stellar catalogue. It gives astronomers a rare opportunity to examine a possible companion of a red supergiant at extremely close angular separation.

There is, however, a small but important scientific catch. The source has not yet earned the final certificate of gravitational companionship. Another observation, after the system has moved substantially along its orbit, is required to demonstrate that the object follows Betelgeuse as a bound companion rather than being a coincidental source along the same line of sight.

That distinction may sound like scientific pedantry. It is not. It is the difference between a compelling piece of evidence and a demonstrated orbital system. Betelgeuse is considered as birth star of Lord Shiva and is revered by Hindus

Preface: A Century-Old Question Returns to the Fore

The possibility that Betelgeuse might possess a companion is not a fashionable idea invented by a recent press release. Astronomers were already considering the possibility of binarity in the early twentieth century. Historical radial-velocity measurements, changes in brightness, and apparent motion on the sky have all been examined and re-examined.

For decades, however, the case remained frustratingly incomplete. Betelgeuse is a red supergiant with an enormous, turbulent atmosphere. Its surface is not a placid disc like a laboratory specimen. Vast convective cells, pulsations, dust formation, and changing atmospheric structures complicate measurements. A small periodic signal can therefore be buried in a considerable amount of stellar noise.

The modern investigation took a decisive turn in 2024. Two independent studies argued that a companion could account for Betelgeuse’s approximately 2,100–2,200-day long secondary period, or LSP, seen in its variability. One analysis based on radial velocity, photometry, and astrometry inferred a low-mass companion; another model likewise connected the LSP with a companion orbiting Betelgeuse.

The predicted geometry offered observers a golden opportunity. The companion was expected to reach maximum apparent separation from Betelgeuse in December 2024. In astronomical observing, timing can be everything. When a faint object is buried beside an overwhelmingly brighter source, even a modest increase in angular separation can turn an almost hopeless observation into a tractable one.

The Geometry of the Observation

Schematic of Betelgeuse and its candidate companion A schematic, not to scale, showing the enormous apparent disc of Betelgeuse, the much fainter candidate companion Betelgeuse B, their projected separation, and a suggested orbital path. Betelgeuse Betelgeuse B 52.32 ± 0.18 mas Schematic only — angular separation and stellar sizes are not to scale

What matters here is the contrast. Betelgeuse B is extraordinarily close to the glare of Betelgeuse on the sky, yet it is vastly fainter. The measured angular separation was only 52.32 ± 0.18 milliarcseconds. At an adopted distance of about 168 parsecs, that corresponds to a projected separation of roughly 8.8 astronomical units — of the same broad order as Saturn’s orbital distance from the Sun.

1. Why Betelgeuse Is Such a Difficult Target

At first glance, photographing two stars sounds straightforward. Point a telescope, take a picture, and look for two points of light. That recipe works tolerably well when the two stars are of comparable brightness. Betelgeuse, however, is another kettle of fish.

The primary star is an enormous red supergiant with an extended, dynamic atmosphere. Its brightness and angular size overwhelm the tiny signal expected from a companion. The problem is not simply resolving two dots. It is extracting a weak astrophysical signal from the structured glare of a bright, evolving stellar surface.

This is where modern high-contrast imaging earns its keep.

ESO’s SPHERE instrument on the Very Large Telescope uses extreme adaptive optics to correct, in real time, for much of the blurring introduced by Earth’s atmosphere. The observation employed the ZIMPOL imaging mode. The data were further treated with angular and spectral differential imaging, or ASDI, and advanced post-processing methods including PACO ASDI and principal-component analysis.

These techniques were developed and refined largely in the demanding business of finding faint objects beside bright stars, particularly exoplanets. Their use here is a useful reminder that astronomical technology is not confined to the problem for which it was originally designed. A technique sharpened on one frontier can become the right tool for an entirely different astronomical conundrum.

2. The December 2024 Observation

The team observed Betelgeuse on 3 and 6 December 2024. The second date proved particularly fruitful. On 6 December, the candidate source was detected at a significance of 6.1 sigma using PACO ASDI and independently recovered at about 5.1 sigma with principal-component analysis.

The measured separation was 52.32 ± 0.18 milliarcseconds, with a position angle of 117.12 ± 0.60 degrees. The agreement between independent processing approaches matters because sophisticated image processing can itself create spurious structures if handled carelessly. Independent recovery therefore strengthens the case that the source is astrophysical rather than merely an artefact of one reduction pipeline.

The source is roughly a thousand times fainter than Betelgeuse. That disparity gives some idea of the observational tightrope involved. Imagine trying to discern a modest lamp beside a searchlight, except that the searchlight itself is not perfectly steady and its surrounding glow changes from one moment to the next.

3. What Is Betelgeuse B?

The observed source is not merely being labelled “a companion” and left at that. Its brightness and colour information allow astronomers to infer something about its nature.

Under the assumption that the two stars are coeval, meaning that they formed at approximately the same time, the 2026 study estimates Betelgeuse B to have a mass of roughly 2.6–3.1 times the mass of the Sun and to be a young main-sequence star.

The word assuming is doing real scientific work here. Stellar mass is not weighed on a cosmic set of scales. It is inferred from observable properties and evolutionary models. If the companion and Betelgeuse are genuinely members of the same stellar system and share a common formation history, those models provide a route to estimating the companion’s mass and evolutionary state.

This also explains why the new result is so interesting. Earlier dynamical studies had inferred a much lower-mass companion from Betelgeuse’s long-period behaviour. The directly imaged source appears substantially more massive under the coeval-star interpretation. The observational picture has therefore become richer, rather than merely confirming every detail of the earlier hypothesis.

3. Betelgeuse B

4. The Long Secondary Period: The Clue That Would Not Go Away

Betelgeuse has several kinds of variability. Some changes occur on timescales of hundreds of days and are associated with stellar pulsation. Superimposed upon these are slower variations. One particularly intriguing cycle has a timescale of roughly 2,100–2,200 days, or about 5.8 years.

This is called the Long Secondary Period, or LSP. LSPs are found in many evolved cool stars, and their physical origin has been an awkward problem in stellar astrophysics. Various mechanisms have been proposed, including atmospheric phenomena and interactions involving a companion.

In Betelgeuse, the LSP became especially tantalising because radial velocity, photometric, and astrometric behaviour could be examined together. The 2024 work by MacLeod and colleagues argued that these data were consistent with a low-mass companion on an approximately 2,110-day orbit. Goldberg and colleagues independently developed a binary interpretation of the approximately 2,170-day LSP.

The December 2024 SPHERE observation was therefore not a fishing expedition in the dark. It was a targeted test of a prediction arising from earlier analysis.

இதுவே Long Secondary Period, அல்லது LSP.

5. A Companion Is Not Automatically the Explanation for Everything

There is a temptation, whenever a long-standing mystery acquires a plausible culprit, to put two and two together and call the matter settled. Science is rather less accommodating.

Betelgeuse’s brightness variations have several components. The newly detected source may be related to the LSP, and the orbital interaction could influence the supergiant’s atmosphere, dust, wind, or surface structure. But the existence of a companion does not, by itself, demonstrate that it causes every observed brightness fluctuation.

This distinction is particularly important because Betelgeuse’s famous Great Dimming of 2019–2020 had a different immediate explanation. Observations showed that dust formed or accumulated along our line of sight and temporarily obscured part of the star. A companion may influence the surrounding environment, but that is a separate question from whether it directly caused that particular dramatic dimming event.

There is an additional wrinkle. A 2025 Hubble Space Telescope study searching for far-ultraviolet signatures of the proposed low-mass companion did not detect the expected spectral signal and placed constraints on the companion’s ultraviolet emission and mass under the model tested. That non-detection did not erase the companion hypothesis, but it demonstrated once again that different observational windows can constrain different pieces of the puzzle.

6. Why “Candidate” Still Matters

The 2026 study is careful in its terminology. The observations provide strong evidence for a close companion, but formal confirmation that Betelgeuse B is gravitationally bound awaits another observing epoch.

Why is another epoch so important?

Because an astronomical image gives position. An orbit requires motion.

If Betelgeuse B is genuinely bound to Betelgeuse, its position should change in a manner consistent with an orbital trajectory. The star should not simply sit in the same place relative to the background sky. Repeated high-resolution observations can establish that motion, refine the orbital elements, and ultimately allow astronomers to replace an attractive hypothesis with a measured dynamical system.

This is one of the most instructive aspects of the discovery. The difficult part is not merely seeing something. The difficult part is demonstrating what that something is.

7. A Stellar System Hidden in Plain Sight

There is something almost paradoxical about the discovery. Betelgeuse is not an obscure star buried in a remote catalogue. It is one of the most familiar naked-eye stars in the sky and has been scrutinised for generations.

Yet its possible companion remained hidden.

The reason is a lesson in observational astronomy: visibility is not the same as detectability. A bright object can conceal a faint neighbour even when both are relatively close in space. The companion is not necessarily absent merely because earlier instruments failed to show it.

Modern astronomy frequently advances in this fashion. Better detectors, sharper optics, improved calibration, sophisticated algorithms, and a good physical prediction can converge at just the right moment. The telescope may have existed before the discovery was possible; what changed was the combination of sensitivity, technique, timing, and theory.

In that sense, Betelgeuse B is not merely a story about a new star. It is a case study in how astronomical knowledge is assembled.

8. What Happens Next?

The next decisive step is straightforward in principle and demanding in practice: observe the candidate again and measure its displacement.

The 2026 team expects a future observation on the opposite side of Betelgeuse’s apparent orbit to provide the crucial test. A successful second epoch would do much more than produce another attractive image. It would constrain the orbit, help determine the system’s dynamics, and strengthen estimates of the companion’s mass and evolutionary state.

The companion may also become a laboratory for understanding how a smaller star interacts with a red supergiant. Such interactions could influence mass loss, the stellar wind, dust formation, rotation, or the eventual evolution of the system. These possibilities are subjects for further investigation, not established consequences of the present observation.

And there is a larger question. Betelgeuse is an evolved massive star and is expected eventually to end its life in a supernova. Whether a companion of this sort can materially alter the final stages of that evolution is not yet known. The new observation turns that question from a purely theoretical exercise into something that can be investigated with an actual candidate system.

9. The Larger Lesson: Seeing Is Only the Beginning

Betelgeuse B is a fine example of why science rarely proceeds in a straight line. A century-old suspicion led to decades of measurements. Modern analyses extracted a periodic signal from a turbulent star. Those analyses generated a prediction. Observers timed their observations to exploit the predicted geometry. Adaptive optics and differential imaging separated a faint source from a brilliant neighbour. Independent processing recovered the signal. Stellar models then offered an interpretation.

And still, the work is not finished.

That is not a weakness of the result. It is the strength of the scientific method. A good observation does not demand instant certainty; it creates a sharper question that another observation can test.

Betelgeuse has therefore acquired something more valuable than a sensational headline. It has acquired a new observational laboratory — a possible red-supergiant binary system in which stellar evolution, orbital dynamics, pulsation, dust, stellar winds, and high-contrast imaging meet on the same astronomical stage.

The faint point of light beside Betelgeuse may eventually become a confirmed star with a well-determined orbit. If so, the discovery will close one chapter of a century-old question and open several new ones.

For the present, the scientifically honest phrase remains the most interesting one: candidate Betelgeuse B.

Addendum: A Useful Change in Perspective

One of the most revealing features of this story is the difference between prediction and discovery. The December 2024 observation was not simply a lucky photograph. Earlier modelling had identified when the putative companion should be easiest to separate from Betelgeuse. The telescope was then pointed at the right target at the right time.

This is a recurring pattern in modern astronomy. Theory and observation are not rival camps standing on opposite banks of a river. They are two sides of the same enterprise. Theory tells observers where to look; observation tells theorists where their models need mending.

Scientific Note on the Status of the Discovery

Status at the time of writing: The December 2024 SPHERE observation provides strong evidence for a close companion, and the 2026 paper describes Betelgeuse B as a candidate companion. Formal confirmation that it is gravitationally bound to Betelgeuse requires a second observing epoch demonstrating the expected orbital motion. The mass estimate of 2.6–3.1 solar masses is conditional upon the assumption that the two stars are coeval.

This wording is deliberate. Scientific language is not a decorative coat applied after the discovery; it is part of the evidence itself.
