CHINTAMANI RAGOONATHA CHARY
The Indian Astronomer Who Sought to Bring the Panchang Closer to the Sky
A forgotten pioneer of observational astronomy, calendar reform, and public scientific education in nineteenth-century Madras.
Foreword to Readers
This essay is part of the Indian Stalwarts series, which seeks to recover and examine the contributions of Indian personalities whose intellectual achievements deserve a more prominent place in our historical memory.
Chintamani Ragoonatha Chary occupies a particularly interesting position in the history of Indian science. He belonged to a family associated with traditional almanac-making, yet spent nearly four decades working at the Madras Observatory, where he acquired considerable proficiency in modern observational astronomy and mathematical computation.
His career presents a fascinating meeting of two intellectual traditions: the Siddhantic astronomical heritage of India and the increasingly instrument-based astronomy of the nineteenth century.
This is not an attempt to place one tradition upon a pedestal at the expense of another. It is an account of a man who recognised that astronomical knowledge must be examined, calculated, tested, and, where necessary, corrected through observation.

Constitutional and Civic Relevance
Article 51A(h) of the Constitution of India identifies the development of scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry and reform as a fundamental duty of every citizen.
Ragoonatha Chary's life offers a historical illustration of this intellectual disposition. His willingness to examine inherited calculations against observed celestial phenomena, his public explanations of eclipses, and his efforts to improve astronomical education resonate with the spirit of inquiry envisaged by this constitutional provision.
The Constitution does not require us to abandon our cultural inheritance. It encourages us to cultivate knowledge through reason, evidence, and a willingness to reform.
THE ENGLISH ESSAY
Preface — When the Panchang Met the Telescope
A calendar is more than a convenient arrangement of dates. It is a mathematical representation of time, shaped by the apparent movements of the Sun, Moon, and planets. In traditional Indian society, the Panchang occupied an especially important position. It connected astronomical calculations with festivals, religious observances, agricultural seasons, and the organisation of everyday life.
For centuries, Indian astronomers had developed sophisticated mathematical systems to calculate celestial positions and determine the divisions of calendrical time. Yet, as observational astronomy advanced during the nineteenth century, an important question became increasingly difficult to avoid: did the calculations in circulation continue to agree with the observed positions of the celestial bodies?
It was in this intellectual setting that Chintamani Ragoonatha Chary emerged as an unusual and consequential figure.
He was neither an outsider dismissing Indian astronomy nor a conservative unwilling to examine its calculations. He understood the traditional astronomical literature, worked with modern instruments, and recognised the importance of bringing the two into a more productive relationship.
His story is not simply that of an Indian who entered a British observatory. It is the story of a self-taught mathematician and astronomical observer who sought to improve the scientific foundations of a living Indian calendrical tradition.
1. A Madras Childhood and a Traditional Inheritance
Chintamani Ragoonatha Chary was born in the Madras region. His birth is generally recorded as 17 March 1828, although the available historical documentation is not entirely uniform. The Royal Astronomical Society's obituary does not establish his birth date, and some later archival descriptions give 1822 or 1828.
His family belonged to the traditional world of Panchang-making. The preparation of almanacs demanded an understanding of astronomical cycles, calendrical computation, and the mathematical rules governing the apparent movements of celestial bodies.
This background was significant. He was introduced to astronomy not merely as a subject of intellectual curiosity, but as a discipline with practical consequences for society.
There was, however, another important institution in his immediate intellectual environment: the Madras Observatory.
Established in the late eighteenth century, it had become an important centre for astronomical observation, positional astronomy, and the preparation of stellar catalogues. Its instruments and observational records represented a different method of investigating the same celestial universe that traditional Indian astronomers had studied for generations.
One sky, two methods of investigation, and an opportunity to understand both: this was the setting in which his scientific career developed.
2. From Junior Employment to First Assistant
Ragoonatha Chary joined the Madras Observatory in 1847, during the directorship of Thomas Glanville Taylor. He was approximately eighteen years old.
His rise was not the consequence of a conventional university education in astronomy. He developed his mathematical and observational abilities through self-study, practical experience, and sustained work at the observatory.
The institution passed through several directorships during his long career, including those of William Stephen Jacob, William Kaye Worster, John Frederick Tennant, and Norman Robert Pogson.
His ability to calculate, observe, and record astronomical phenomena gradually distinguished him from other assistants. He eventually became First Assistant, a position he held during the later and most productive years of his career.
The designation was no mere ornamental title. The work required mathematical competence, familiarity with astronomical instruments, and the patience to make observations repeatedly and accurately.
An observatory is not sustained by grand discoveries alone. Its scientific reputation also rests upon thousands of careful measurements, reliable records, and the unglamorous labour of reducing observations into usable astronomical data.
Ragoonatha Chary became particularly valuable in this essential work.
3. The First Scientific Publication — 1859
An important milestone in his career came in 1859, when a short paper under the name Ragoonatha Charey appeared in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
Its title was:
On the Determination of Personal Equation by Observations of the Projected Image of the Sun.
The expression personal equation has a specialised meaning in observational astronomy. Two observers examining the same event through an instrument might record slightly different times because of differences in reaction, perception, and individual observing habits.
These small discrepancies mattered greatly in nineteenth-century astronomy, when the timing of celestial events was an essential part of positional measurement.
His paper addressed this problem through observations of the projected solar image. It was a contribution to the practical question of how observational differences could be recognised and accounted for.
The achievement deserves attention beyond its modest length. He became the first Indian-born astronomer to publish a paper in the Society's journal, according to the historical study by Rao and colleagues.
It was a significant entry into the international scientific literature, not merely a ceremonial distinction.
4. The Variable Star That Refused to Remain Constant
One of the most memorable episodes in Ragoonatha Chary's astronomical career concerns the variable star R Reticuli, located in the southern constellation Reticulum.
The story began before his decisive observation.
On 9 February 1864, the star had been recorded as an ordinary star of approximately magnitude 8.5 by another Madras Observatory assistant, Mootoosawmy Pillay.
When it was sought again in January 1866, it could not be seen through the meridian-circle telescope. Its brightness had apparently fallen below the instrument's practical detection threshold.
On 16 January 1867, Ragoonatha Chary observed the star again. Its reappearance led to further observations and comparisons over subsequent nights.
These measurements established that its brightness varied. It reached a maximum of approximately magnitude 7.75 around the middle of February 1867, with a period of variation estimated at roughly nine months.
The discovery was formally acknowledged in Norman Pogson's report of the Madras Observatory.
The important scientific distinction is that Chary established the star's variability through observation. The earlier record of the star's position was not itself his discovery.
R Reticuli became an important landmark in the history of Indian observational astronomy. The discovery demonstrated that Indian observers working at an observatory in Madras were contributing original findings to the developing international study of variable stars.
It also placed Chary among the early Indian astronomers whose work extended beyond the routine preparation of astronomical tables.
5. The Madras Observatory and the Discipline of Precision
The nineteenth-century Madras Observatory was involved in a wide range of astronomical work. Its responsibilities included stellar cataloguing, positional measurements, eclipse observations, and the study of variable stars.
A particularly important instrument in this period was the meridian circle, installed at the observatory in 1862.
A meridian circle is designed to measure the positions of celestial objects as they cross the observer's local meridian. By recording the precise time of transit and the corresponding angular position, astronomers could determine stellar coordinates.
Ragoonatha Chary contributed substantially to this work. Historical accounts attribute approximately 38,000 transit observations in the developing Madras star catalogue to his personal efforts and participation.
This figure should be understood in the context of a collective observatory programme rather than as 38,000 independent discoveries.
His contribution lay in the painstaking accumulation of reliable measurements. The star catalogues produced from such work became valuable reference material for subsequent astronomical investigations.
It is worth remembering that nineteenth-century positional astronomy was a demanding occupation. Instruments had to be aligned, clocks regulated, observations repeated, and calculations reduced. A single inaccurate measurement could compromise the usefulness of a larger series.
In this respect, Chary's reputation rested upon a quality that is sometimes overlooked in popular accounts of science: observational integrity.
6. The Great Indian Eclipse of 1868 — An Indian-Led Expedition
On 18 August 1868, a total solar eclipse crossed parts of the Indian subcontinent. It became an important episode in the history of nineteenth-century astronomy.
The eclipse attracted international scientific attention. Astronomers were increasingly interested in studying the Sun's outer atmosphere, particularly the corona and prominences, which become visible during totality.
The Madras Observatory organised an expedition to Vanpurthy, a principality under the Nizam of Hyderabad. Ragoonatha Chary was entrusted with leading the Indian observing party.
This was an important distinction. He was not merely a subordinate accompanying a European astronomer. He was placed in charge of an astronomical expedition, with responsibility for its preparations, calculations, observing arrangements, and personnel.
His preparatory work involved calculating the circumstances of the eclipse for different locations. He used the Nautical Almanac and adapted its information to the geographical coordinates of the observing stations.
He also worked out the likely visibility of stars and planets during totality, including possible occultations by the Moon.
Such calculations required the application of spherical astronomy, positional geometry, and accurate time determination.
The journey itself was an undertaking. The expedition travelled approximately 228 miles by railway and another 142 miles by bullock transport, reaching Vanpurthy after a long journey.
The weather, unfortunately, was uncooperative. Cloud cover severely restricted the observations. Chary was left with limited opportunities for clear astronomical work, although he recorded the darkness and other circumstances of the event.
The expedition did not produce the spectacular spectroscopic discoveries made by other observing teams during that eclipse. Those achievements, including the identification of helium's spectral signature, belong to the wider international history of the 1868 eclipse.
Nevertheless, the Vanpurthy expedition was historically important for a different reason: it was the first modern astronomical eclipse expedition in India led by an Indian astronomer.
Its influence extended beyond the immediate scientific results. The expedition helped stimulate public interest in astronomy and contributed to the subsequent movement for calendar reform in southern India.
7. The Eclipse of 1871 and Further Observational Work
Chary's participation in eclipse astronomy did not end at Vanpurthy.
During the total solar eclipse of 11 December 1871, he was assigned to the observatory expedition at Avanashi in the Coimbatore region.
His responsibilities included measurements of the solar cusps, the appearance of prominences, the extent and form of the corona, the visibility of stars, and the accurate timing of different phases of the event.
These were not casual observations. Each measurement was intended to provide information that could be compared with predictions and observations made elsewhere.
He also undertook observations during the annular solar eclipse of 6 June 1872, using the Lerebours equatorial telescope.
The repeated involvement of an Indian observer in these programmes is significant. It demonstrates that Chary had acquired sufficient technical competence to undertake work requiring considerable independence and responsibility.
8. The Royal Astronomical Society — Recognition in 1872
Ragoonatha Chary's achievements received international recognition when he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society on 12 January 1872.
His candidature was supported by Norman Pogson and E. B. Powell, the Director General of Public Instruction in the Madras Presidency.
He is recognised as the first Indian Fellow of the Society.
The distinction must be understood in its nineteenth-century setting. Indian participation in institutional scientific organisations was far from commonplace, and the colonial scientific establishment offered limited opportunities for advancement.
His election was therefore more than a personal honour. It was an acknowledgement of the scientific competence of an Indian observer whose work had earned recognition through published research and sustained astronomical service.
He also contributed three papers to the Society's Monthly Notices during his career.
9. The Panchang Reform — Drigganita and the Observed Sky
Perhaps the most consequential part of Ragoonatha Chary's legacy lies outside the observatory itself.
It concerns the traditional Indian Panchang.
The Panchang is a lunisolar almanac whose five principal elements are:
- Tithi — the lunar day;
- Vara — the weekday;
- Nakshatra — the lunar mansion;
- Yoga — a calculated angular relationship between the Sun and Moon;
- Karana — half a tithi.
These elements are determined through astronomical calculations and have traditionally been used to organise religious, cultural, and social time.
Indian mathematical astronomy developed elaborate computational traditions to determine the positions and motions of celestial bodies. The Siddhantic texts formed a major part of this intellectual inheritance.
However, astronomical tables are mathematical models. Their accuracy depends upon the adequacy of their parameters and the corrections applied to them.
Over time, differences could arise between calculated positions and observed celestial positions. Changes in astronomical parameters, the accumulation of small computational errors, and the use of inherited tables could all contribute to discrepancies.
Chary believed that the calculations used in traditional almanacs required improvement through the incorporation of modern observations.
His work on the Asylum Press Almanac, whose new series began in 1862, provided an important opportunity to put this approach into practice.
He introduced the method known as Dṛk Siddhānta, or observationally grounded astronomical calculation, and developed a Dṛk Panchang.
The new Panchang was based upon modern astronomical information, including the British Nautical Almanac, adapted for Indian calendrical requirements.
Its publication in Tamil and Telugu is documented from 1868 onwards.
This was not simply a matter of replacing one calendar with another. It represented an attempt to reconcile traditional calendrical practice with improved astronomical data.
The distinction between the two principal approaches is worth understanding.
The Vakya method relies upon traditional tabulated expressions and inherited computational schemes. The Drik approach seeks to determine celestial positions through observationally corrected calculations and more current astronomical parameters.
The historical importance of Chary's work lies in the effort to bring the calculations closer to the actual celestial configuration.
It was a reform from within a traditional intellectual framework, not a wholesale rejection of that framework.
The movement encountered resistance. Traditional almanac-makers had established methods, professional standing, and longstanding systems of practice. Introducing new calculations was therefore not merely a mathematical exercise; it also involved questions of authority, custom, and public confidence.
Chary did not confine his efforts to printed arguments. Historical accounts describe his public lectures and telescope-viewing sessions at his own residence, where he invited interested people, including traditional Panchang-makers, to examine celestial objects directly.
He sought to persuade through demonstration, calculation, and explanation.
A further detail deserves attention: he prepared a manuscript of computational tables with Tadakamalla Venkata Krishna Rao of Triplicane, intended to assist other Panchang calculators. This indicates that his ambition extended beyond publishing an individual almanac. He wished to make the method reproducible by other practitioners.
The subsequent Drik Panchang tradition in southern India is part of the wider legacy of this reform movement. However, it would be historically unsound to claim that every modern Thirukanitha Panchangam is a direct, unchanged continuation of Chary's original publication.
10. The 1874 Transit of Venus — Astronomy for the Public
On 9 December 1874, Venus passed across the apparent disc of the Sun, producing a rare astronomical event known as a Transit of Venus.
Such transits had considerable importance in nineteenth-century astronomy. Observations from widely separated locations could be combined to refine estimates of solar parallax and, consequently, the scale of the Solar System.
The Madras Observatory prepared for the event. Ragoonatha Chary took a particular interest in explaining the phenomenon to the public.
He prepared an illustrated treatise entitled Transit of Venus, originally drafted in Tamil. It explained the geometry of the transit, its circumstances, and the principles of observation.
The work was presented in a dialogue format, making a technical astronomical subject accessible to readers without specialised training.
The surviving historical accounts record versions in several Indian languages. These include Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Urdu, Hindustani, and English; other language versions are also mentioned in the surviving publication history.
His approach was remarkably modern in one important respect: he understood that scientific knowledge could not be confined to the walls of an observatory.
It had to be explained in languages that people could understand.
There is, however, a historical qualification. The weather at Madras during the 1874 transit was unfavourable. Thick clouds prevented useful photographic or positional measurements. The second internal contact, recorded by E. Isis Pogson and Ragoonatha Chary, was the only contact observation reported from the observatory.
Thus, his most enduring contribution to the event was not a successful series of transit measurements at Madras, but the educational publication that he prepared to explain the phenomenon.
The original English edition was subsequently preserved and reprinted by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in 2012.
The reprint is particularly valuable because it allows present-day readers to examine a nineteenth-century Indian astronomer's own explanation of a major celestial event.
11. An Indian Observatory of His Own
Ragoonatha Chary's ambitions extended beyond his employment at the Madras Observatory.
He wanted to establish an independent Indian astronomical observatory that could serve as a place of instruction and practical training for Indian students.
In an address delivered at Pachaiyappa's Hall, Madras, on 13 April 1874, he appealed for financial support for this proposal.
He was prepared to contribute his own astronomical instruments towards the establishment of the institution.
He also envisaged an astronomical society whose members could support observational research and the dissemination of knowledge.
The proposal was significant in the context of nineteenth-century scientific education. He was not content merely to become an accomplished observer within an existing institution. He wished to create opportunities for future Indian astronomers.
His appeal reflected an understanding that scientific progress requires more than individual brilliance. It requires instruments, institutions, instruction, and a community of practitioners.
Unfortunately, these plans did not mature into the institution he envisaged before his death.
12. Jyotisha Chintamani — An Unfinished Ambition
One of Ragoonatha Chary's most ambitious intellectual projects was a proposed two-volume work entitled Jyotisha Chintamani.
The work was intended to provide Hindu astronomers, particularly Siddhantic practitioners, with a systematic manual of astronomical rules, formulae, and tables.
Its purpose was to incorporate the mathematical methods and corrections established by contemporary European research while retaining what was valuable in India's own astronomical literature.
The proposal is particularly revealing. Chary was not advocating the uncritical importation of foreign calculations. Nor was he arguing that inherited Indian methods were beyond examination.
He sought a synthesis: the application of improved mathematics and observation to a body of knowledge that had its own long intellectual history.
The intended manual was never completed. There is no established surviving completed edition of the two-volume work.
His deteriorating health, coupled with financial limitations, prevented the project from reaching fruition.
It remains one of the unfinished chapters in the history of nineteenth-century Indian astronomy.
13. The Final Years and His Death
By the late 1870s, Ragoonatha Chary's health had deteriorated.
He continued his astronomical responsibilities until approximately 1878, when his condition prevented him from maintaining his previous level of work at the observatory.
He died in Madras on 5 February 1880.
His passing brought to a close a career that had spanned nearly four decades of astronomical service.
The obituary published by the Royal Astronomical Society in 1881 recognised his skill in the use of instruments, his speed in computation, and his honesty in recording observations.
It also recorded his contributions to the Madras star catalogue, his work on almanacs, and his efforts to communicate astronomy to Indian audiences.
The obituary is an important contemporary record of his achievements, particularly because it was written soon after his death.
14. Beyond the Textbooks — What Makes His Story Important?
Ragoonatha Chary's importance is not confined to a single discovery or institutional honour. His career offers several historical insights that deserve closer attention.
14.1 The Indian Observer as a Scientific Contributor
His work challenges the assumption that Indian participation in nineteenth-century astronomy was limited to assisting European scientists.
He published research, discovered a variable star, led an eclipse expedition, and was elected to an international scientific society. These were substantive scientific contributions.
14.2 The Panchang as a Mathematical Instrument
The Panchang is often discussed exclusively in connection with religious observances. Its underlying calculations, however, belong to the history of mathematical astronomy.
Chary's reform efforts remind us that the preparation of an almanac involves celestial mechanics, angular relationships, time reckoning, and the calculation of planetary positions.
14.3 Science Communication in Indian Languages
His illustrated publications on eclipses and the transit of Venus demonstrate that scientific communication in regional languages has a substantial history in India.
He recognised that knowledge becomes socially meaningful when it can be understood, discussed, and examined by the wider public.
14.4 The Importance of Scientific Institutions
His proposal for an Indian observatory was an early expression of the need for indigenous scientific infrastructure, training, and institutional independence.
The aspiration was not simply to possess a telescope. It was to establish an environment in which Indian students could learn the practice of astronomy.
14.5 A Tradition That Could Be Examined and Improved
Perhaps the most enduring lesson is the manner in which he approached traditional knowledge.
He recognised its historical importance, understood its mathematical foundations, and was prepared to introduce corrections when observations demanded them.
That is a far more productive relationship between tradition and science than either unquestioning acceptance or wholesale dismissal.
15. Conclusion — A Life Between Two Astronomical Worlds
Chintamani Ragoonatha Chary lived at a time when astronomy in India was undergoing considerable institutional and intellectual transformation.
The Madras Observatory represented the increasingly international world of instrument-based astronomy. The traditional Panchang represented a long-standing Indian system of mathematical timekeeping.
Chary worked within both worlds. He understood the importance of astronomical observation, contributed to international scientific literature, and sought to improve the calculations used in traditional Indian calendars.
His achievements were not without limitations. The 1868 eclipse expedition faced poor weather, the 1874 transit observations at Madras were largely frustrated by clouds, and his proposed observatory and major astronomical manual remained unrealised.
Yet, his contribution was not diminished by these unfinished undertakings.
He demonstrated that scientific progress is not necessarily a contest between civilisations or intellectual traditions. It can be a process of examination, dialogue, adaptation, and improvement.
More than a century after his death, his name deserves to be remembered not merely as that of an assistant at the Madras Observatory, but as an Indian astronomer who sought to make traditional calculations answer to the observed heavens.
The sky does not recognise the boundaries of inherited schools of thought. It offers the same celestial evidence to every observer willing to examine it.
And that, perhaps, is the most fitting tribute to Ragoonatha Chary.

Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
On the Determination of Personal Equation by Observations of the Projected Image of the Sun.
- திதி — சந்திர நாள்;
- வாரம் — கிழமை;
- நட்சத்திரம் — சந்திர மண்டலத்தின் விண்மீன் பிரிவு;
- யோகம் — சூரியன், சந்திரன் ஆகியவற்றின் நெட்டாங்குகளின் கூட்டுத்தொகையை அடிப்படையாகக் கொண்ட கணிப்பு;

Every reasonable effort has been made to verify the historical details against scholarly research, contemporary publications, and archival sources. Where historical records differ, the uncertainty has been identified rather than concealed.
