Our Constitutional Duty: Article 51A(h)
The Constitution of India, under Article 51A(h), places upon every citizen the duty to develop scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry and reform.
The discovery of 2026 ED138 offers an opportunity to fulfil that spirit in practice. It reminds us that scientific knowledge is not a closed book, that established classifications may be refined by new evidence, and that an unanswered question is an invitation to investigate rather than a reason to speculate.
Scientific curiosity must walk hand in hand with intellectual honesty.
2026 ED138: A New World Beyond Neptune
Foreword
The Solar System is considerably more populous than the familiar planetary diagrams of our schooldays might suggest. Beyond Neptune, beyond even the celebrated dwarf planet Pluto, lies an extensive region inhabited by icy bodies, remnants of planetary formation, and objects whose dimensions and orbital behaviour continue to challenge astronomers.
On 27 October 2026, the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory announced the discovery of a particularly intriguing member of this distant population: 2026 ED138. The object has been identified as a dwarf-planet candidate, and preliminary estimates suggest that it may measure between 600 and 1,500 kilometres across.
If subsequent investigations establish that it possesses sufficient mass to assume a nearly spherical shape, it may eventually join the recognised family of dwarf planets. Until then, scientific prudence requires us to retain the word candidate.
This is the story of a distant world, an exceptionally capable observatory, and the detective work through which a faint moving point of light becomes a recognisable member of our Solar System.
About the Author
I am Dhinakar Rajaram, an independent science writer, science communicator, amateur astronomer, and astronomy outreach volunteer based in Chennai, India.
My interest in the night sky began during childhood and developed into a more formal engagement with astronomy in 2010. Through public outreach, writing, observational activities, and the Tamil Nadu Astronomical Society, I have sought to make scientific subjects accessible to readers who may not necessarily possess a formal scientific background.
I am particularly interested in the relationship between scientific discovery, technological progress, and the history of human understanding. My approach to astronomy is founded upon curiosity, verification, and the conviction that the wonders of the Universe should be explained without either diminishing their beauty or exaggerating what science has established.
Preface: A Point of Light in a Crowded Sky
Imagine looking towards a region of the night sky filled with millions of distant stars. Somewhere in that crowded celestial landscape, an exceptionally faint object moves ever so slightly against the seemingly stationary background.
To the unaided eye, there is nothing to distinguish it. Even in a conventional astronomical image, its appearance may be unremarkable. Yet that tiny displacement between successive observations can reveal something extraordinary: a previously unrecognised world orbiting our Sun.
This is precisely the sort of astronomical detective work that has brought 2026 ED138 to attention.
The discovery is especially interesting because the object was not simply identified through one isolated observation. Repeated observations, computational searches, and the recovery of older archival images helped astronomers establish its identity and reconstruct its orbit.
It is a timely reminder that the Solar System has not surrendered all its secrets. We have merely acquired better instruments with which to look for them.
1. Meet 2026 ED138: An Unfamiliar Resident of the Outer Solar System
The provisional designation 2026 ED138 identifies a newly reported trans-Neptunian object discovered in observations made by the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile.
Its discovery was credited to Matthew Holman, a member of the Rubin Observatory operations team and an astrophysicist associated with the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. Holman works on computational methods for identifying distant moving objects in astronomical survey data.
The discovery announcement was made through the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center on 27 October 2026.
Preliminary measurements indicate that ED138 is an unusually bright and large member of the trans-Neptunian population. Its estimated diameter is approximately 600–1,500 kilometres, depending upon the assumed reflectivity of its surface.

| Classification | Trans-Neptunian object; dwarf-planet candidate |
| Discoverer | Matthew Holman |
| Observatory | Vera C. Rubin Observatory, Chile |
| Rubin observations | 4 March–11 July 2026 |
| Number of Rubin observations | 30 observations on 20 nights |

| Estimated diameter | 600–1,500 kilometres |
| Orbital inclination | Approximately 24.4 degrees |
| Orbital eccentricity | Approximately 0.139 |
One distinction is worth keeping in mind. The approximately 46 AU distance quoted in the discovery announcement describes the object's distance from the Sun in the relevant observational context. Its barycentric semi-major axis, approximately 43.09 AU, is a different orbital quantity. These figures should not be treated as interchangeable.
2. Beyond Neptune: What Is a Trans-Neptunian Object?
Neptune, the eighth planet, occupies an average orbital distance of approximately 30 astronomical units from the Sun. Beyond its orbit lies a vast region containing numerous small icy bodies, collectively known as trans-Neptunian objects, or TNOs.
These bodies are among the surviving remnants of the primordial material from which the Solar System developed approximately 4.6 billion years ago.
The region includes the Kuiper Belt, a broad population of icy objects extending beyond Neptune. Pluto is its most familiar large member, although the population contains countless smaller bodies.
The Kuiper Belt is not a uniform collection of objects moving in identical orbits. Astronomers distinguish several dynamical populations according to their orbital characteristics and their gravitational relationships with Neptune.
Some objects occupy relatively low-inclination, nearly circular orbits. Others possess more eccentric or inclined trajectories, reflecting the gravitational disturbances and orbital rearrangements that occurred during the Solar System's early history.
The distinction is important. The present-day orbits of these distant bodies provide clues to the migration of the giant planets and the dynamical evolution of the outer Solar System.
3. The Significance of an Inclination of 24.4 Degrees
One of the more interesting characteristics of 2026 ED138 is its orbital inclination, estimated at approximately 24.4 degrees relative to the Solar System's reference plane.
Orbital inclination describes the angle between the plane of an object's orbit and a chosen reference plane, commonly the ecliptic or, in this research, the relevant barycentric reference plane.
In simple terms, ED138 does not travel around the Sun in almost the same flat plane occupied by the major planets. Its orbital path is noticeably tilted.
This is not an isolated peculiarity. The outer Solar System contains numerous objects with substantial orbital inclinations and eccentricities. Their orbits provide evidence of a dynamically disturbed and evolving planetary environment.
The designation hot-classical is used for a dynamically excited population of Kuiper Belt objects, distinguished from the colder, more nearly coplanar classical population. However, ED138's orbital classification should not be treated as conclusively settled merely from its inclination. Its orbit lies near Neptune's 12:7 mean-motion resonance, and the research team has noted uncertainty about its precise resonant status.
That is an important distinction between describing an object's observed orbit and assigning it a settled dynamical classification.
4. How Large Is This Distant World?
The estimated diameter of 2026 ED138 ranges from approximately 600 to 1,500 kilometres. This is a substantial range, and it is not the result of astronomers directly measuring the object's physical diameter.
The estimate is derived principally from its observed brightness and assumptions about its geometric albedo: the fraction of incident sunlight that its surface reflects towards an observer.
A highly reflective object can appear bright even when relatively small. A darker object may need to be considerably larger to produce the same apparent brightness.
The researchers have considered a range of plausible albedo values, approximately 0.04 to 0.25. These assumptions produce the broad diameter interval.
An object with an albedo of 0.25 reflects a considerably greater proportion of sunlight than one with an albedo of 0.04. Consequently, the same observed brightness can correspond to markedly different physical dimensions.
An approximate diameter of 970 kilometres follows from an intermediate albedo assumption of about 0.10. It is an illustrative estimate, not an independently measured diameter.
Astronomers therefore require additional observations, particularly at infrared and longer wavelengths, to determine how much thermal radiation the object emits. Such measurements can help constrain its size and surface properties.
This is where the distinction between an estimate and a measurement becomes more than a matter of terminology. It is central to the scientific assessment of whether ED138 qualifies as a dwarf planet.
5. What Makes a Dwarf Planet?
The classification of dwarf planets became a particularly prominent subject in 2006, when the International Astronomical Union adopted a formal definition of a planet and a separate definition of a dwarf planet.
Under the IAU's Resolution B5, a dwarf planet must satisfy four principal conditions:
- It must orbit the Sun.
- Its gravity must be sufficient to overcome rigid-body forces and produce a nearly round shape through hydrostatic equilibrium.
- It must not have cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.
- It must not be a satellite of another body.
The phrase cleared the neighbourhood does not mean that a planet's orbital path must be entirely empty. It refers to the body's gravitational dominance over its orbital region, relative to other objects.
The eight recognised planets possess this dynamical dominance to a degree that dwarf planets do not.
Pluto, for example, shares its distant orbital environment with a substantial population of other trans-Neptunian objects. It is therefore classified as a dwarf planet rather than one of the eight planets.
The five dwarf planets recognised by the IAU are:
- Ceres, in the asteroid belt;
- Pluto, beyond Neptune;
- Eris, in the distant trans-Neptunian population;
- Haumea, another distant icy world;
- Makemake, a large Kuiper Belt object.
If ED138 is eventually confirmed to satisfy the necessary physical criteria, it could become the sixth recognised dwarf planet.
Its size makes that possibility particularly interesting. Nevertheless, a large estimated diameter alone does not confer official status. The object's physical nature and nearly spherical shape must be established.
6. The Observatory That Found It: Vera C. Rubin Observatory
The discovery of 2026 ED138 is inseparable from the remarkable capabilities of the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory, situated on Cerro Pachón in northern Chile.
The observatory is named in honour of the American astronomer Vera Cooper Rubin, whose observations of galaxy rotation provided important evidence for the existence of dark matter.
Its principal instrument is the Simonyi Survey Telescope, equipped with the LSST Camera, a 3.2-gigapixel digital camera.
The camera's field of view covers approximately 9.6 square degrees of the sky in a single exposure. Its primary mirror measures 8.4 metres across.
These specifications make the observatory exceptionally well suited to repeated, wide-field imaging. Rather than concentrating exclusively on one small celestial target, Rubin repeatedly surveys enormous portions of the sky.
The resulting observations form the foundation of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, or LSST, a decade-long programme designed to study the changing Universe.
For Solar System astronomy, this repeated imaging is particularly valuable. Asteroids, comets, and distant icy bodies reveal themselves through their movement relative to the background stars.
The telescope's enormous camera, rapid survey capability, and computational infrastructure allow astronomers to search for moving objects across an immense volume of observational data.
7. Finding Movement Among Millions of Stars
One of the intriguing aspects of the ED138 discovery is the region of sky in which it was found. It lies close to the plane of the Milky Way, where the apparent density of background stars is particularly high.
For an observer, this is a difficult neighbourhood in which to identify a faint moving object. A small icy body can easily be lost against the crowded background of stars.
Rubin's repeated observations and computational search methods helped overcome this difficulty.
Matthew Holman employed a computational search programme developed with his colleague Kevin Napier. The programme, known as Pointdexter, examines enormous numbers of detections and attempts to link observations that correspond to the same moving object.
The challenge is not merely to recognise a point of light. The software must establish which detections belong to one physical object and distinguish its movement from background sources, noise, and unrelated astronomical events.
Holman identified ED138 in October 2026 while analysing Rubin observations collected earlier in the year. Subsequent examination by Mario Jurić revealed additional observations in Rubin's catalogues and images.
The result was a much more complete observational record than the initial detection alone could have provided.
8. Thirty Observations, Twenty Nights, and a Decade of Evidence
Rubin observed 2026 ED138 on 30 occasions across 20 nights between 4 March and 11 July 2026.
These observations provided the essential basis for recognising the object's movement and establishing its orbit.
But the investigation did not stop there.
Astronomers searched archival observations made by the Dark Energy Camera, or DECam, mounted on the Victor M. Blanco 4-metre Telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile.
The Asteroid Institute's ADAM precovery service helped uncover additional detections in these older images. The archival material extended the observational record back to 2016.
Taken together, the available observations allowed researchers to reconstruct more than ten years of the object's orbital history.
Discovery means identifying an object that has not previously been recognised.
Precovery means locating earlier images in which that same object was already present, although its identity was not known at the time.
Precovery can substantially improve an object's calculated orbit by extending the time interval between observations.
This is one of the most fascinating developments in modern survey astronomy. An object may have been photographed years earlier without anyone realising what was hiding in the image. Modern computational techniques can return to those records and identify it retrospectively.
In effect, the past becomes a new observational resource.
9. The 12:7 Resonance: A Gravitational Connection with Neptune
The preliminary orbital analysis places 2026 ED138 near Neptune's 12:7 mean-motion resonance.
An orbital resonance occurs when two orbiting bodies have orbital periods related by a ratio of small whole numbers.
In a 12:7 mean-motion resonance with Neptune, the relevant orbital periods would be approximately related by twelve revolutions of the trans-Neptunian object for every seven revolutions of Neptune, or the equivalent period ratio.
Such resonances are important because repeated gravitational interactions can influence the long-term orbital behaviour of distant objects.
However, proximity to a resonance does not automatically establish resonant membership. Astronomers must examine the evolution of the relevant resonant angle over time.
The research indicates that the resonant status of ED138 is not yet settled. It is therefore premature to describe it as a confirmed resonant object.
The resemblance of its orbital parameters to those of other distant objects, including Haumea in certain respects, makes it an interesting subject for further dynamical study.
10. How Long Does 2026 ED138 Take to Travel Around the Sun?
Its estimated barycentric semi-major axis of approximately 43.09 AU provides a useful starting point for an approximate orbital-period calculation.
For an object orbiting the Sun, Kepler's third law gives the approximate relationship:
P = orbital period in Earth years
a = semi-major axis in astronomical units
Using the approximate semi-major axis of 43.09 AU:
P ≈ 43.093/2 ≈ 283 Earth years
This is an approximate two-body estimate, not a final ephemeris prediction. A detailed orbital calculation must account for the adopted orbital solution and planetary perturbations.
Nevertheless, the result gives us a sense of the timescale involved. One revolution of ED138 around the Sun would take roughly 283 years.
It is a journey lasting several human lifetimes.
11. The Light-Travel-Time Perspective
Another way of appreciating the object's remoteness is to consider how long sunlight takes to reach it.
One astronomical unit is the mean distance between Earth and the Sun, approximately 149.6 million kilometres. Sunlight takes about 8 minutes and 19 seconds to cross this distance.
At approximately 46 AU, sunlight would require roughly 6 hours and 23 minutes to travel from the Sun to the object.
This is an approximate illustration using the quoted heliocentric distance, rather than a permanently fixed light-travel time.
It also means that the sunlight reflected by ED138 must make the return journey towards Earth before our telescopes can register it. The light we receive has travelled through interplanetary space for many hours.
For a distant object, astronomy is quite literally an exercise in looking back in time, albeit on a much shorter timescale than the observations of distant galaxies.
12. Why Was It Not Discovered Earlier?
Given its estimated dimensions, one might reasonably wonder why an object of this size remained unidentified until 2026.
The explanation lies partly in its location.
ED138 lies close to the crowded plane of the Milky Way. Earlier surveys often avoided such regions or observed them at insufficient depth to identify faint trans-Neptunian objects reliably.
A large object in the distant Solar System is not necessarily easy to discover. Its apparent brightness depends upon its physical size, reflectivity, distance, and observing geometry.
Moreover, its slow apparent movement against the background stars makes the linking of separate observations a demanding computational problem.
Rubin's repeated observations and wide-field imaging have helped address these limitations.
The discovery demonstrates that the absence of an earlier detection does not necessarily mean that an object was physically hidden. It may simply have escaped the observational methods available at the time.
13. What Happens Next?
The identification of 2026 ED138 is the beginning of a more detailed investigation.
Astronomers will seek additional observations to establish its physical characteristics with greater confidence.
Infrared measurements are particularly important because they can help determine the object's thermal emission and constrain its size and albedo.
Further optical observations may also provide information about its brightness variations, rotation, and surface characteristics.
Its orbital evolution will continue to be examined to establish whether it occupies a particular dynamical population or a mean-motion resonance with Neptune.
The distinction between a large trans-Neptunian object and an officially recognised dwarf planet will ultimately depend upon the evidence concerning its physical nature.
If its gravity has indeed shaped it into a nearly spherical body, the case for dwarf-planet classification would be strengthened considerably.
Until then, 2026 ED138 remains an important candidate awaiting further investigation.
14. The Wider Significance: Rubin's Solar System Revolution
The discovery of ED138 is not an isolated achievement. It forms part of a broader transformation in observational astronomy.
Rubin's early Solar System observations have already produced large numbers of asteroid and trans-Neptunian object detections.
Its decade-long survey is expected to identify many previously unknown moving objects, improve the orbital measurements of known bodies, and reveal populations that earlier surveys could not adequately examine.
The implications extend beyond the Kuiper Belt.
A better inventory of the small bodies in the Solar System will help scientists understand planetary formation, gravitational migration, orbital resonances, and the distribution of primordial material.
It may also help refine our understanding of the early history of the giant planets and the processes that shaped the architecture of the Solar System.
The most important lesson is that discovery is not simply a matter of building a bigger telescope. It requires the integration of precision optics, sensitive detectors, computational algorithms, archival data, and scientific collaboration.
15. A New Member of the Solar System's Unfinished Story
The Solar System is often presented as a familiar arrangement of eight planets, a handful of dwarf planets, and countless smaller bodies. Yet the discovery of 2026 ED138 reminds us that this picture is still being refined.
Beyond Neptune, the cosmic landscape remains populated by objects whose existence, dimensions, and dynamical histories are only gradually coming into focus.
A body that may be nearly a thousand kilometres across, travelling in an orbit inclined by more than twenty-four degrees and situated dozens of astronomical units from the Sun, is a remarkable addition to our growing catalogue of distant worlds.
Whether ED138 eventually receives formal recognition as a dwarf planet remains to be established. That uncertainty does not diminish the importance of the discovery. On the contrary, it illustrates the proper working of science: observation, hypothesis, measurement, verification, and classification.
There is much more to discover beyond Neptune. The Rubin Observatory has merely begun to turn the pages.
And somewhere in that immense, dark expanse, other distant worlds may still be waiting for their turn in the astronomical spotlight.

(Legacy Survey of Space and Time — LSST) எனப்படுகிறது.
P = பூமி ஆண்டுகளில் சுற்றுப்பாதைக் காலம்
a = வானியல் அலகுகளில் அரை நீண்ட அச்சு
